Barricado, Teh Peng and Murderers emerge champions at this year's Contiki Beach Netball Festival 2010
Intense one-day competition see men and women do battle on the sand in four-on-four netball
SINGAPORE - 7 March 2010: Contiki Holidays, the worldwide leader in holidays designed especially for 18 to 35 year-olds, and Netball Singapore hosted an incredibly exciting netball tournament for the second consecutive year at the Contiki Beach Netball Festival 2010 (CBNF 2010). With 52 teams number competing and over 1,000 spectators cheering them on, some of the best netball was played out on the sands of Siloso Beach, Sentosa.
In sync with Contiki's trademark tours for only 18 to 35 year-olds, the winner for each of the following three categories were:
- Women Under 23 - JC and Tertiary Institutions Only: Barricado
- Women Open - Ages 18 to 35 Only: Murderers
- Mixed Open - Ages 18 to 35 Only: Teh Peng
Breaking the traditional Netball mould with the introduction of 50-foot by 50-foot sand courts, teams not only had to adapt to the unfamiliar surface but also the fast and physical match that a four-on-four game of Netball brings.
At CBNF 2010, street Netball rules were in effect; this means games will be played on half-courts with four per team. No position bibs were used while only two members from each team were allowed in the circle at any time. The matches were in round robin format with the top two teams from each group advancing to the knockout stage on the way to the finals. Each team had 10 minutes to outscore their opponents in this exciting event.
There were also a host of fringe activities to keep participants and spectators entertained. For participants, there were Surf Clinics provided by Wave House with guided instructor and BBQ dinner from 1800hrs to 2100hrs, and for spectators, there were a series of games, live musical performances and quizzes with vouchers and prizes that were given away.
